hello @ smsing.app
Every time a user tries to register on a website, he is asked to enter his details, including mobile number and email address. The website then generates verification code and send it to both mobile number and email address of the user. However, the verification code received by mobile phone comes through SMS in the format of alphanumeric PIN number which has to be entered on the website. This whole process is known as Two-factor authentication (2FA).
To protect websites and online stores, Two Factor Authentication is becoming an increasingly popular authentication protocol which adds another layer of security to the traditional username and password model.
This important use of SMS service by online websites, to ensure their safety and protection, shows the trust that is put on SMS service by ecommerce users worldwide.
TYPES
Website owners use two types of authentications to protect their websites: PIN authentication and direct message authentication.
In PIN authentication, SMS Gateway takes responsibility for generating the PIN and sending it to mobile number of the user who is trying to sign up on the website. When user enters the PIN on the website, the system contacts the SMS Gateway to verify the PIN number entered.
However, direct authentication with SMS is simplest to implement for the authenticating websites. All they have to do is send an initial message and verification message containing PIN to the SMS Gateway and the gateway does the rest of the work.
STRENGTH
An industry recognized approach for building a strong, powerful, and safe tool, Two-factor authentication is one of the most popular and secure tools used by website owners against cyber-attacks now a days.
Two-factor authentication reduces the chances of vulnerability against cyber threats by using two levels of verification along with username and password. Its popularity also lies in the fact that it is a cost-effective solution which provides additional security without additional hardware, charges, or token licenses.
Two-factor authentication especially uses SMS service to verify the user’s background because of text message’s reliability, accessibility, and quick delivery. The SMS are received timely regardless of the network, location, and mobile phone it is being sent upon.
Some applications and websites use one-time passcodes (OTP) for two-factor authentication as well to protect their data and websites from cyber-attacks additionally.
INDUSTRY
According to statistics, the healthcare business is the third-highest industry which is hit with cyberattacks every year. SMS two-factor authentication allows increased protection of the data of valuable patients and staff members.
Information technology and services, as a cost-effective and efficient solution, deploys Two-factor authentication across greater number of customers and staff members as well. While keeping the cost and administrative heads low, this method increases their protection and security.
Almost all businesses especially ecommerce businesses, provide Two-factor authentication to their clients to better protect their valuable financial, legal, and personal information.
Two-factor authentication suits those government organisations ideally who have only one-time or occasional authentication needs, including part-time and temporary employees, contractors, retailers, and clienteles.
